How to Create ePub Files Using the Pages App?

Nowadays, there is no need to carry heavy books in your bag. With e-books, the whole volumes of classic editions fit into a small iPhone. Moreover, with one touch to the screen, you can choose which work you will read today. To make your Apple gadget show the book you selected, convert a file to the format that it will support.

ePub is an open standard for both digital and electronic books. And the Pages program allows importing a variety of documents into this format. Why do we convert a wide variety of files to ePub? To read them using the iBooks program on Mac, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

create epub files

We like the ePub format for its’ possibility to support the following functions:

  • The possibility to make changes in font, size, and orientation of the text (portrait and landscape view) for floating-point layouts.
  • It plays the video embedded in the document. However, in Pages for iOS, a placeholder image appears instead of video.

When exporting a file to ePub, remember that the following items are deleted: smart fields, remarks, image effects. Large pictures are reduced to 4-megapixel size, and footers are transformed to endnotes.

If you want the content to be suitable for different gadgets and orientations, select a Reflowable. This type of document is best suited for text files.

For a single layout to be applied to all pages in a document, regardless of device and orientation, select a Fixed one. It allows to zoom in and out and is the best choice for documents with a large number of images.

You can export any document with a page layout to a fixed one, as well as any text document in both types of design. A table of contents can be inserted into a book as well. If it has not been inserted, one will be generated automatically based on paragraph styles.

How to use ‘Book in digital format (ePub)’ Template

In Pages for Mac v5.6 and later, you can select the ‘Book in digital format (ePub)’ template, which will help you to start creating books. In Pages for iCloud or Pages for iOS – a similar sample document.

Use a template or a sample file to see how the result will look like after exporting to ePub. Having read recommendations and instructions, use it as a template for creating your document.

  • Pages for iCloud and iOS. Download the sample document – Open it in Pages and use it for own workbook – Save the copy before changing the file – Use the duplicate for creation your book.
  • Pages for Mac. Choose File – New – In the template selector, click Miscellaneous – Select the ‘Book in digital format (ePub)’ template and click the ‘Select’ button.

Book cover

While exporting a book, you can select the cover type for it. It is displayed in the iBooks library of the user or as an icon on the computer.

If you select an image option, you can take it from your Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. The cover image can be in PDF, JPG, EPS, PNG, GIF, TIFF or PSD format and should not exceed 4 megapixels in size.

If you select the absence of a book cover, the iBooks library for the book will use a common icon.

Table of contents

If it has not been inserted into a Pages document prior to exporting it to ePub, it will be created automatically based on the paragraph styles used. iBooks users can see it by selecting View – Show Table of Contents/ clicking the Table of Contents icon on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

To make the customized table of contents displayed in the text, follow these steps to create it:

  • In the Insert menu, choose Table of Contents – Document.
  • After selecting, go to the Format inspector.
  • In the Table of Contents zone, select all paragraph styles to display items in the table of contents.
  • Add or remove items by selecting or deselecting paragraph designs in the Table of Contents area.
  • Create a customized table of contents in Pages for iCloud or Pages for iOS.

Chapters and text sizes

Pages automatically performs chapter splitting according to the paragraph styles. To start, select the title of the very first chapter in the book. Apply a heading paragraph style such as Title, Heading 2, Heading 3 or Headline, Red. When using the ePub template to indicate a chapter break, use the Chapter Title style.

When exporting an ePub file with floating layout and viewing it in iBooks for a book, the font selected in the program settings are installed. The text sizes specified in the book are converted to large, medium or small, and readers can choose the preferred one. Note that the colors in original and digital versions may differ.
