How to Import and Export Documents in/to Different Formats in Pages?

From time to time, we face the problem when receiving a document in a format that does not allow it to be edited. The Pages app can help you out. It will easily open needed files and also convert documents into the suitable formats.

This program allows you to open, edit and share files on your Apple gadgets. In turn, Pages for iCloud allows you to open, edit and share files on any Mac or Windows computer over the Internet.

Pages for iOS

Pages for iOS works with the following file formats:

  • Files of Pages’05 or later;
  • Microsoft Word (Office 97 or later and Office Open XML);
  • Plain Text (.txt);
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf).

To open a file in Pages on iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, select it from the manager while starting the Pages. To open a file created in another app, open this program and choose the attachment, then focus the file, tap the icon copy to pages, then ‘Copy to Pages.’

Pages for iOS can export:

  • PDF;
  • Word (.docx only);
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf);
  • ePub.

These items are stored as .pages files, but you can send them in a different format. To do this, follow the guide:

  • Open the file and click more icon;
  • Tap Export;
  • Select the required format and method for sending a file;
  • Finish the sending process.

Pages for Mac

The app supports:

  • Pages ’05 or later;
  • Microsoft Word – Office 97 or later (.doc) and Office Open XML (.docx);
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf);
  • Plain Text (.txt).

To import a text document, you can use Finder. To do that, right-click the needed file and select Open With – Pages. If you don’t have other text editors installed on your Mac except Pages, just double-click on file.

If the file is grayed out, its format is not supported.

Pages for Mac can export:

  • PDF;
  • Microsoft Word – Office Open XML (.docx) and Office 97 or later (.doc);
  • Plain Text files (.txt);
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf);
  • ePub;
  • Pages ’09.

Before you start the process, make sure that the exported file is open in Pages.

  • Open File → Export to and choose the format.
  • In the Export Your Document window, you need to select a format and specify additional parameters. For instance, you can adjust the image quality for PDF or save a Word document in an older version. Some formats allow you to protect the file with a password.
  • Press Next.
  • Type in the file name and select the folder for saving.
  • Click the Export button.

Before closing, verify that the file has been saved. If any changes are made to the file after export, they will only be visible in the working Pages file.

Pages for iCloud

It supports:

  • Pages ’05 or later;
  • Microsoft Word – Office 97 or later (.doc) and Office Open XML (.docx);
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf);
  • Plain Text (.txt).

To save a file to iCloud without iCloud Drive help on a Mac or Windows computer, you can send it via iCloud.com.

  • Log in to iCloud.com account.
  • Click Pages.
  • Select the file you wish to upload, drag it to the document manager or click icloud upload.
  • Select a file on your Mac or Windows computer. Click the Choose button.
  • A file is now in Pages for iCloud.

Pages for different kind of gadgets use the same format. Files designed or edited in the Pages program on one platform can be opened in its analog on other platforms.

You can update the Pages app on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to the latest version using the App Store.
