How to Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone?

In specific cases, users might need to unpair Apple Watch and iPhone to erase the former and get it restored to its factory settings.

How to Disconnect Apple Watch and iPhone?

  1. Keep your iPhone and Apple Watch in range while you’re unpairing them.
  2. On your iPhone, launch the Apple Watch app → tap the My Watch tab → select your watch in the upper part of the screen.
  3. Tap the icon pair icon to the left of the watch that you want to unpair.
  4. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.

  5. If you’re using Apple Watch 3 (which includes GPS and Cellular functionality), select whether to keep or delete your cellular plan.
  • Keep your cellular subscription plan if you intend to pair the Apple Watch and iPhone again.
  • Remove your cellular subscription plan if you unpair the Apple Watch and iPhone for good.
  • Note: To cancel your cellular subscription, contact your phone carrier.
  1. Tap Unpair Apple Watch again to confirm.

In case you need to disable the Activation Lock, provide your Apple ID password.

Next, your iPhone will create a new Apple Watch backup. This backup file can be used to restore a new Apple Watch.

Once the Apple Watch unpairs, the message saying Start Pairing will appear.

How to Pair Apple Watch and iPhone?

  1. Switch on the Apple Watch.
  2. Hold the Apple Watch and iPhone within connectivity range.
  3. Wait until the Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch message shows up on your iPhone → tap Continue.
  4. Put your iPhone over the animation on the Apple Watch screen.
  5. Configure your Apple Watch as a new device or restore from a backup.
  6. Authorize with your Apple ID.
  7. Make settings for Location Services, Route Tracking, and Siri.
  8. Create a passcode to use with Apple Pay and similar services further on.
  9. Wait until both iPhone and Apple Watch sync.

How to Erase Your Apple Watch?

In the case of emergency when there’s no iPhone at hand, it is possible to purge the settings and content on your Apple Watch completely.

  1. Go to Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. If you’re using the Apple Watch 3 (which includes the GPS and Cellular functionality), select if you wish to keep or delete the current cellular plan.
  • Keep your cellular subscription plan if you intend to pair the Apple Watch and iPhone again.
  • Remove your cellular subscription plan if you unpair the Apple Watch and iPhone for good.
  • Note: To cancel your cellular subscription, contact your phone carrier.
  1. To confirm further changes, tap Erase All. Next, the Apple Watch will revert to the factory settings.
